Once the capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is full of architectural gems spanning varying centuries and shifts in power. This Sacred Valley tour will allow you to marvel at Coricancha (‘The Temple of the Sun’), the most important temple of the Inca Empire, as well as the 15th century stone fortress Sacsayhuaman, ritualistic site Qenqo, and the alleged military ruin Puka Pukara. We’ll also visit the city’s main square to admire historical artifacts at the Cathedral (which took nearly a century to construct) to complete today’s Peru tour.

The day’s journey takes us off the beaten path. Archaeological site Moray is just an hour and a half from Cusco city, yet feels worlds away. Concentric terraced platforms, believed to have contributed to ancient agricultural research, make this an unforgettable highlight in Peru. Nearby are the salt mines of Maras that once allowed locals to trade their harvest for products from other regions of the Empire. *From December to March (rainy season), you’ll have the option to visit Chinchero, the town of Maras and chicherías, instead of the salt mines (Las Salineras).

A masterpiece of architecture even by today’s terms, this famed peak is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. This part of your Peru tour will allow you to appreciate this majestic site and the views from the heights of the Machu Picchu ruins. Upon returning to Aguas Calientes, you will be able to indulge in a hearty lunch and have the rest of the afternoon to yourselves.

It’s a luxury shared by few, but today is your second chance to further explore the Inca Citadel on your own. Highlights include the control gate ‘Puerta del Sol’ (Intipunku), the underground complex ‘Temple of the Moon,’ and the ‘secret’ entrance to the Machu Picchu ruins known as Inca Bridge. For the fit, a climb up neighboring peak Huayna Picchu (subject to availability) can offer a bird’s eye view of Machu Picchu, one of the best Peru highlights. In the afternoon, you’ll take a train from Aguas Calientes to Ollanta, from where you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Cusco.
